Use case

Sharing a boat: bookings, handovers and costs

Boat sharing turns an indulgence into something reasonable — if bookings, handovers, seasonal work and damage are handled clearly.

A boat is the strongest argument for co-ownership there is. It is expensive to buy, expensive to keep, and used surprisingly few days a year. Split between three or four owners, it goes from an indulgence to something entirely reasonable.

It is also the shared asset where coordination matters most, because a boat is used in short bursts, needs constant upkeep, and can be damaged in a way a house cannot.

What makes boats different

Short bookings. A cabin is booked in weeks; a boat is booked in days and afternoons. The calendar needs to handle that without a phone call each time.

Condition matters between users. Fuel level, a full water tank, a clean hull, the state of the head. Whoever steps aboard next inherits whatever the last person left. A short handover checklist prevents most of the friction in shared boats.

Seasonal work is heavy. Launch, haul-out, winter storage, antifouling, engine service. These are big, dated, expensive jobs that need an owner and a deadline.

Damage and insurance. Agree in advance who carries the excess when something breaks on someone's watch. Doing it after the fact is how good groups fall out.

A setup that works

  • Bookings in a shared calendar, including day trips, with a rule for peak weekends.
  • A standing handover checklist: fuel, water, waste, lines, cleaning, log entry.
  • Fixed costs — mooring, insurance, storage — by ownership share. Fuel by use.
  • A seasonal task list with named owners for launch, service and haul-out.
  • A written agreement covering damage, excess, sale of a share and what happens if one owner stops using the boat.
